How to Fix League of Legends Connection Issues

Try these steps while waiting for servers to recover. Start at step 1 and work down.

01
Check Riot Games Status
Visit status.riotgames.com and select League of Legends and your server region (NA, EUW, EUNE, etc.).
02
Repair your client
In the League of Legends client: Settings (gear icon) → General → Initiate Full Repair. This fixes corrupted files.
03
Flush DNS
Open Command Prompt as admin and run "ipconfig /flushdns". DNS issues are a common cause of LoL login failures.
04
Check Windows Firewall
Add exceptions for LeagueClient.exe and League of Legends.exe in Windows Firewall → Allow an app through firewall.
05
Disable VPN
VPNs add latency and can get your IP flagged. Disable any VPN before launching League.
06
Try a different DNS server
Change your DNS to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) — this can bypass routing issues to Riot's servers.
Upgrade your connection
A gaming router cuts lag and drops significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is League of Legends down right now?

GamerOutage.com tracks real-time player reports for League of Legends by region. Check the live chart — if reports are spiking, Riot's servers are likely experiencing issues.

Why is League of Legends client not opening?

Client launch failures are often caused by a corrupted install, an antivirus blocking the process, or Riot's authentication servers being down. Try a client repair first.

How do I fix high ping in League of Legends?

High ping is usually a local network issue. Use a wired connection, close background downloads, and check if your ISP is having routing issues. If other players in your region report high ping too, it's Riot's servers.

Why does League of Legends say "Attempting to Reconnect"?

"Attempting to Reconnect" means LoL lost its connection to the game server. This can be a brief network hiccup or a server-side issue. If it lasts more than 30 seconds, restart your router and check status.riotgames.com.

Why was I penalized for leaving a League of Legends game?

LoL's Leaving Buster system penalizes you if you disconnect from games, even during server outages. If you were penalized during a confirmed outage, you can submit a support ticket to Riot at support.riotgames.com to request leniency.
